Next Stop: Future
From having not a single mile of high speed rail only 20 years ago, China now has the largest high speed rail network in the world. These 200mph state of the art trains slash the notoriously long times the former diesel trains take to cross this vast country. The cavernous station the trains depart from are spotless and gleaming, and lie half-empty, platforms unused -- built for a near future where millions of people use it every day. For now for the lucky few who can afford it - at the moment still the preserve of wealthier Chinese and tourists - they offer a vision of fast comfortable and clean travel across the country.
The Flat and The Smog
Slap bang up against the edge of the desert and a mountain range lies the political heart of China; flat as a billiard ball, dry as hell and prone to dust storms - greatly acerbated by pollution caused by horrific car control and nearby heavy industries - Beijing might not seem like the wisest or most appealing place to house a major city, much less the capital city. But yet for all the negatives it is an incredibly exciting and dynamic place. Filled to the brim with young Chinese people drawn from all across the country for a dream of a better life and excitement for the future.
